Support and housing for the mentally ill

Stable housing is an essential part of success for anyone living with mental illness, providing dignity and a safe space to live. Providing such housing can be costly, yet some organizations in the Washington, D.C., area have stepped up to the challenge.

Pathway Homes, Inc. is a charitable organization that provides housing and supportive services to more than 350 homeless and other adults with serious mental illness in northern Virginia. Approximately 80 percent of the people Pathway Homes serves have been homeless or would be homeless without the services the organization provides. Pathway Homes has a variety of programs that span the continuum of care needs, catering to both those who are highly supported and those who are highly independent. All of Pathways' programs are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and comply with the American Disabilities Act.

Green Door is a community program that prepares people with severe and persistent mental illness to work and live independently. Based on a model of rehabilitation designed by people with mental illness for people with mental illness, they have helped nearly 3,000 District residents move from institutions and homeless shelters to lead fulfilling, independent lives. Green Door provides medication education and monitoring, community support/case management services, substance abuse support, and transitional and permanent housing. They also have a day program, job training, and job placement programs.
